The changeover of power in the Army appoints four new generals
Posted On 07 Mar 2017
The Army has a new commander, Major General Édison Narváez Rosero, who replaces General Luis Castro Ayala in the command, who was removed from office by President Rafael Correa.
The president had to issue two decrees to have a man of confidence in the leadership. The first was signed on Sunday, March 5, to dismiss Commander Castro and appoint his replacement, Carlos Egüez. The second was issued yesterday to remove the newly appointed commander, who lasted a day in office, and to appoint Narvaez. As a result, the president left out two other generals of division: Carlos Rodríguez and Gustavo Cabrera.
The decrees did not mention the reasons for the shakeup of the army’s leadership, something that had been feared two weeks ago because of General Luis Castro’s letter after the elections of February 19. In the letter, he called for a meeting of the Council of Generals and the pronouncement of the Joint Command after the rumors that were circulating through the social networks.
It was the same General Castro who yesterday gave light at the meeting of the Council of Generals that, at the time, was denied, through a statement, by the Joint Command of the Armed Forces and the Ministry of Defense.
“Look, Mr. (Ricardo) Patiño, the Council of Generals meets by telephone or the Internet,” said the general, who stated that the government authority does not know how the Army works.
