The repeal of the Communications Act is already one of the main axes wielded by electoral fronts and opposition political organizations. Amidst their numerous differences, they all agree, so far at this point. To achieve their goal they must win the majority of the Assembly in the presidential and legislative elections in 2017.

The ruling party, by contrast, wants to toughen the law with increased economic sanctions, in a kind of endorsement to the President´s animosity towards the press, which he describes as his main enemy.

The attempts to modify this law in the Assembly are not new. Legislator Cynthia Viteri (PSC-Madera de Guerrero) was the first to submit a draft reform that was not qualified by the Collective Rights Commission. Yesterday, a second draft prepared by Assemblywoman Mae Montaño (CREO) was analyzed in this commission with the presence of the Superintendent of Communication, Carlos Ochoa.
