The dollars reach Cali
Sales in Tulcan have plummeted by 80% and the fall reaches a 90% for retailers. That’s what Nelson Cano, president of the Chamber of Commerce of Tulcan revealed to Daily Expreso.
“Ecuadorians do not go only to Ipiales for tourism trade, but they even go to Cali,” this information was confirmed by Harold Delgado, president of the Chamber of Commerce of Ipiales.
Representatives of trade in the border towns agree on the reasons why Ecuadorians dare to a longer trip (from Ipiales to Cali is 12 hours by car). “In Cali you can find cheaper products, due to the strengthening of the dollar versus the Colombian peso and many take a plane to Medellin (where large garment factories are located) or Bogota, for $ 80. Tourists make purchases for their personal use,” Delgado says.
