The foreign service of Ecuador will be reduced by 10%

Foreign Minister María Fernanda Espinosa announced that there will be a 10% reduction in the number of accredited officials at embassies and consulates abroad.
“This is part of the austerity decree and, in some cases, a little bit more (of 10%), and because there was an overcrowding of personnel in certain places that was tenacious. We are going to reduce the presence of missions according to the needs, in certain consulates we have to reinforce, we have made a very diligent, objective evaluation, “she said.
The Foreign Ministry decided as a result of the evaluation that was called “optimal staff”, which is expected to be implemented in the next three months, and which identifies the following data: the bilateral agenda with the country where the diplomatic mission is located, the number of officials what are required, their profiles, how many people attend each embassy and consulate, in order to avoid “discretion” in the designation and assignment of positions.
Espinosa says that there has not been a rigorous process of specialization and that’s why in the proposed law that is ready a mechanism of continuous training is established; will return the Diplomatic Academy. (I)
