The IESS, under criminal investigation for the disbursement of $252 million

The Prosecutor’s Office is investigating alleged irregularities in payments for $ 251,985,858.43, made by the Ecuadorian Institute of Social Security (IESS) between 2012 and 2015 to ten private hospitals in Guayaquil and Quito for the external provision of health services to affiliates.

The case came to light in July last year, after the results of examinations conducted by the National Audit Office on bills paid by the Social Security to 36 service providers (24 in Pichincha and 12 in Guayas) for a total of $ 503,722,125. These disbursements were validated by R.DES Servicios Corporativos, a company contracted by the IESS.

The complaints also reach Social Security officials, since, according to the National Audit Office, they failed to comply with applicable rules in the procurement and accreditation processes,  and the referral of patients to those private health centers.
