The New York Times Speaks about Case El Universo

Posted On 24 Jan 2012

The most influential paper in the world, The New York Times condemned in one of their leading articles the trial against El Universo newspaper. The article with the title, “An Assault on Democracy” calls to all the democratic leaders of the hemisphere to pronounce themselves and move back the posture of the Ecuadorian President Rafael Correa.

The article of The New York Times adds itself to another made by The Washington Post that was published last week sharing a similar subject. Newspapers like Los Angeles Times, El País of Spain have also made articles regarding the trial against El Universo newspaper.

The Ecuadorian president is currently leading a campaign against free speech, stalking the critics of his presidency and pressuring the independent stations. Correa has employed several methods to subjugate the press in Ecuador, among those is a controversial Communication bill that would forbid the news media from “either directly or indirectly promoting any given candidate, proposal, options, electoral preferences or political thesis, through articles, specials or any other form of message.” (AV)
