The outcry against an exchange stamp that restricts imports and seeks to boost exports has been unanimous in recent weeks among the business sector.

To give weight to their opinions, the Chamber of Commerce of Guayaquil sought support abroad. Therefore, it located in Chile former finance minister in the government of Sebastian Pinera, Felipe Larrain, and invited him to share with students, officials, businessmen and journalists his recommendations for a period of economic difficulty.

Larrain gave a lecture yesterday in the Guayaquil Convention Center and spoke with EXPRESO after his presentation at a press conference. Pablo Arosemena, representative of the traders, said that the government is still studying the alternatives to solve the trade deficit.

The authorities, he said, are becoming sensitized to the criticism of the exchange stamp. His counterpart in Quito, Patricio Alarcon, also present at the meeting, added that other ideas as fixed tariffs aren´t good either. Larrain was emphatic: he said ‘no’ to trade restrictions of any kind.
