The origin of the tuna, the new hurdle for selling to the EU
Everyone is concerned about whether the agreement with the European Union is approved this year or not, and if exports will continue to arrive to Europe exempted from tariffs. But the countdown is over for the tuna and fish sector. This sector, whose subheadings exports recorded $ 1,222 million in 2015 -the third leading product in the country, as a group, representing 10.4% of non-oil sales- is facing a tariff barrier.
And its European buyers already fired the alarm, judging by the letter of uncertainty submitted by the National Association of Manufacturers of Canned Fish and Shellfish of Spain (Anfaco). In it, they expose the uncertainty with which tuna products processed in Ecuador arrive to Europe.
