The tuna industry seeks international sustainability certification

The country’s tuna industry has the goal of acquiring the certification of sustainable fisheries, awarded by the Marine Shewardship Council.
This was indicated to Daily Expreso by Guillermo Moran, coordinator of the fishing improvement project.
The European market requests this stamp. Consumers not only seek quality, good prices, and content, but also sustainability.
To acquire the certification it is necessary to meet three main points:
– To fulfill the level of sustainability of tuna fishing according to the statutes of the Tuna Commission and the Fisheries Secretariat.
– A good plan for incidental capture. You can not prevent the occasional capture of a shark or turtle, but this must not be the rule since this poses risks to the ecosystem.
