The United States warned on March 2, 2017, that Ecuador is “one of the countries where most illegal drugs transit” en route to North America and Europe. In its annual report on 2016 on drug trafficking sent today by the State Department to the US Congress, it is pointed out that the countries of the Andean region are still the world’s largest producers of cocaine, being Colombia at the lead, followed by Peru and Bolivia. Colombia has “demonstrably failed” in its fight against drugs, according to the statement.

Located between two of the world’s largest cocaine producers – Peru and Colombia – Ecuador is “one of the countries where most illegal drugs are transiting” on the way to the United States and Europe.
