“The health emergency is also affecting our @Zoo_Quito. If they can donate to the official accounts, let’s all help, ”Mayor Jorge Yunda said on Twitter, after visiting the facility on Monday, May 4, 2020.

Located in Guayllabamba , a parish in the north of the District, the space managed by the Fundación Zoológica del Ecuador houses emblematic animals such as the Amazon jaguar , the spectacled bear , the condor .

“The @Zoo_Quito is a pioneer in wildlife conservation in Ecuador; His noble and sacrificed work materializes in the care of 600 animals demure from the mascotization, the animal trade or hunters. Today he needs our help, ”said Juan Manuel Carrión , ornithologist and current mayor of the Metropolitan District.

Among these animals there are also lions , ocelots , peccaries , different types of birds , different types of monkeys , etc. A wildlife-saving clinic in Quito

According to information from the Municipality of Quito, between January 1 and April 9, 2020, 68 wildlife animals entered the zoo’s veterinary clinic to receive care, after being rescued from different locations.

At the center, animals injured by mascotization, illegal trade or hunting are treated. Recovered species that do not have difficulty returning to their natural habitat are reinserted.

One of its last guests is a wounded condor with a shot that was found near El Quinche on April 27 last. “Citizens of good will rescued him and brought him to the Guayllabamba zoo, where veterinarians are saving his life,” Yunda said Monday in a video.

“Let us work together to recover this species of the national coat of arms, the emblem of Ecuador and of the Andean sectors that does not become extinct. Let us support the condor, Quito, land of condors,” said the Mayor.

A campaign to the rescue of the Quito Zoo

The “wild animals that are in the clinic, in recovery areas and in enclosures require daily veterinary attention and contact with wildlife caretakers who accompany their recovery,” reports the Zoological Foundation of Ecuador on its website.

“The lack of income that comes only from our box office puts this work at risk. Therefore, we request your support to face this emergency situation together. ”

The #EntradaZoolidaria initiative is underway and calls everyone to contribute from home. It involves the purchase of virtual inputs , which will become effective when it is safe to return to perform activities in the outdoors, in places controlled with measures biosafety .

“Buy your Zoolidaria ticket and when we reopen the doors you can visit this rescue and rehabilitation project for wildlife. You can also acquire a ‘zoolidaria’ membership and come to the zoo with your family as many times as you want ”, reads an advertisement published on the internet.

Another form of collaboration is through donations . They can be made in the current account 3037077804 of Banco Pichincha, in the name of the Fundación Zoológica del Ecuador. You can also communicate to the email vheredia@quitozoo.org.

On the Foundation’s website, it is narrated that “a healing space receives dozens of patients annually who require medications and expensive supplies for their healing. Currently, given the state of emergency, we are at a rather critical moment; however, we will continue working and your donation supports our work. The animals and staff at the Quito Zoo thank you. ”

“If you want to continue supporting us, please share this information with friends and family so that more people can join.”

This Quito zoo received an average of 20,000 people per month. With this income, rescued animals that arrive every day with different injuries could be cared for . The center is responsible for covering the costs involved in the rehabilitation of the species .
