There Will Be a Fine for Those Who Will Not Vote In Referendum

According to the National Electoral Council (NEC), those who will chose not to vote this May 7th in the coming Ecuadorian Referendum must pay $ 34.40 as a penalty.
Edwin Jimenez, NEC Logistics Chief, said that according to art. 202 of the Democracy Code, the fine will be 10% of base salary, it means $ 26.40. In this amount the value of a form must be added, which currently is $8.00.
Moreover, CNE Vice President, Carlos Cortez noted: “It is an obligation to give the vote, we must go to vote. The important thing is to attend (the referendum)to let others that this democracy instrument is valid (…)”.
