Timber exports grow boosted by teak
Despite the low prices of raw materials and the domestic economic contraction, timber exports grew by 12.9% in metric tons (mt) and 0.7% in value between the first half of this year and the same period of 2015, according to Central Bank of Ecuador (BCEfor its Spanish acronym). While the shipping slung and pressed wood rose to 58% in volume and 10% in dollars.
These two products, along with articles of leather, plastic, rubber, other processed sea products, shrimp, fruit and abaca are among the export sectors that closed the first half of the year with positive figures. The performance of the timber sector is also reflected in the stock market. The price of the shares of 16 companies in the sector showed an increase of between 0.25 and 1.75 USD between June this year and the same month of 2015.
