Tungurahua Volcano Roars Back to Life
Posted On 17 May 2011
At about 22:30 yesterday and overnight, Tungurahua volcano resumed its explosive activity and spewed abundant ash that headed to the north and northeast.
“We saw incandescence and expulsion of large blocks that have accumulated on the flanks also bellows in nearby areas. This does not exclude the fact that in the next few days the giant may come in more intense eruptive phases,” said Daniel Andrade, volcanologist of Tungurahua Volcano Observatory (OVT).
Ash emissions with explosions, roars and incandescent material, are expected to happen; as well as an eruption, similar to the one occurred in June and August 2006, is possible because of the large amount of magma inside the cone.
