U.S. and European countries enlist new sanctions against Russia
The presidents of the United States, Barack Obama, Germany, Angela Merkel, France, François Hollande, UK, David Cameron, and Italy, Matteo Renzi, yesterday expressed their willingness to apply new sanctions against Russia for its role in the crisis of Ukraine.
In a telephone conversation whose content was released by the Elysee Palace in a statement, the five leaders “confirmed their intention to take further action against Russia” before Moscow’s inaction against separatists in eastern Ukraine.
Despite this, they were willing to further contacts with the Russian authorities, but urged them to adopt “a truly collaborative approach in the management of the Ukrainian crisis,” stated the French presidency.
Likewise, they also complained that despite “numerous calls” to Russian President Vladimir Putin, Russia “has not actually put pressure on the separatists” to negotiate.
