UK Government seeks to Block Internet Access to Calm Down Protests

Posted On 13 Aug 2011

The British Government seeks a formula to prevent social networks to serve as a way of communication in organizing riots. The government does not rule out the possibility of blocking SMS in situations of street violence.

British Prime Minister, David Cameron said the government is working with the police, intelligence services and the Internet industry with the intention of “stopping” to those who use social networks to organize violent and criminal acts.

Cameron has not given further explanation in the special session of the Parliament. There are no clues on the possible interventions to curb the power of attraction that Twitter and Facebook have shown in this type of cases.

While British Prime Minister has alluded to social networks, the Interior Minister, Theresa May, said the Government is considering the possibility of blocking mobile messages at the moment of the disturbances.

Analysts criticize the chosen measure that will block the access of the Internet. The measure, they say, resembles to the situation adopted in Egypt and Tunisia, where the measure did not exactly calm down those who sought change.
