The United States Government provided resources for security in Ecuador, which is part of the cooperation offered due to the internal armed conflict that the country is experiencing.
Part of this cooperation is the facilitation of the delivery of more than 20,000 bulletproof vests for the National Police of Ecuador, details a statement from the United States Government on Monday, January 22, 2024.
It also includes the donation of UD 1 million in critical security and emergency response equipment, including ambulances and defense logistics support vehicles.
The United States also announced that, in the coming days, the FBI will increase its personnel in the country to support the National Police and the Attorney General’s Office of Ecuador.
The United States Department of Homeland Security has also sent personnel to support security issues such as:
- Training of police and prosecutors.
- Provide additional support in digital forensics and other critical analysis to target gang members, drug trafficking networks, and corrupt officials.
- Technical assistance regarding the protection of executive officers.
On the afternoon of Monday, January 22, a high-level delegation from the United States arrived in Ecuador to discuss security cooperation with the government.
After finishing the meeting, Foreign Minister Gabriela Sommerfeld described the meeting as a “powerful and concrete political signal” of support in the face of the internal armed conflict.
Military equipment begins to arrive
On the other hand, Jaime Vela, head of the Joint Command of the Armed Forces (FF.AA.), confirmed that on the night of January 22, 2024, an Antonov An-124 plane, with Ukrainian registration, arrived in Guayaquil.
Generally, this aircraft is hired by countries to transport heavy and large merchandise to other territories.
