UN suspended Libya from Rights Council
This Tuesday, the General Assembly of the UN decided to suspend Libya from the Human Rights Council of the UN. The decision was made because of the repression of the government of Muammar al Gaddafi. The General Assembly, with 192 members decided without voting the suspension of Libya, after the General Secretary of the UN, Ban Ki-moon requested a decisive measure.
The Council of Human Rights had complained last Friday in Geneva about the suspension of Libya. This recommendation had to be approved by the General Assembly. Meanwhile the president of Venezuela, Hugo Chavez, ally of Gaddafi, condemned a possible attack on behalf the United States claiming that the Americans only cared about the oil of Libya. Several members of the Assembly, including the diplomat, Susan Rice, classified the words of Chavez as shameful since it distorts the reality of a country that cannot give lessons on democracy.
