Urban poverty in Ecuador increased in march
The National Institute of statistics and censuses (INEC) announced yesterday that in Ecuador urban poverty increased nearly two points in March, in relation to the same month in 2012, from 16.03 to 17.74%.
The study was conducted in five cities, and only Cuenca doesn’t register an increase in poverty, while in Guayaquil there was an increase of 11.04% to 12.77%; Quito climbed from 8.97% to 10.85%; Machala, 9.51 to 11.98%, and Ambato, 8.04% to 10.54%.
During his last citizen broadcast the President of Ecuador, Rafael Correa, said that according to the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC), Ecuador has reduced poverty by 10.3 percentage points in recent years, and in terms of the distribution of wealth, it indicated that it fell seven points in the Gini coefficient, which measures income inequality.
