2022 starts with a monthly inflation of 0.72% registered last January compared to December 2021. This is the highest monthly inflation of the last 12 years, only equaled (0.72%) in January 2014.

The INEC reported that the division that most affected monthly inflation in January was Food and non-alcoholic beverages, with 0.4226%.

Likewise, Guayaquil is the city that presented the monthly variation higher than the national monthly variation with 1.17%. This was reported this Friday by the National Institute of Statistics and Censuses (INEC) through the results of the Consumer Price Index and the official measurement of inflation,

Annual inflation stood at 2.56%, taking January 2021 as a reference, the month in which it stood at -1.04%. The cities with the highest annual variation, above the national variation, were Santo Domingo, Cuenca, Guayaquil and Manta.

The monthly price survey is carried out in 5,523 economic establishments and 3,942 rented dwellings (house, apartment or room) in the urban area, in nine self-represented cities.

The INEC reported that the three divisions that most affected monthly inflation in January are Food and non-alcoholic beverages (0.4226%); Furniture, articles for the home and for the ordinary maintenance of the home (0.1220%); and Miscellaneous goods and services (0.0509%).

The report also analyzes the structure of the monthly price variation by region, it can be seen that the cities of the Coast (0.92%) showed higher monthly variations than the cities of the Sierra (0.50%). On the other hand, the cities of the Coast (2.71%) presented annual variations greater than those of the Sierra (2.39%).

Meanwhile, the average monthly family income (composed of nominal remuneration and monthly bonuses; it does not include reserve funds) of a typical household (4 members with 1.6 recipients of a unified basic remuneration) in January 2022 was $793.33.

The basic family basket in January 2022 cost $724.39, which implies that the average family income covers 109.52% of the total cost of the basic family basket. The cost of the basic basket increased by 0.66% compared to the previous month.

The value of the basic family basket in the Sierra region was $733.78, that of the Coast is $715.00, with Cuenca being the most expensive city with a basic basket of $752.03. For its part, the vital basket had a cost of $514.00, generating a surplus of $279.33 of family income. The cost of the vital basket increased 0.82% in reference to the cost of the previous month. (I)
