21.1% of Ecuadorians leave the country due to change of residence
The National Institute of Statistics and Censuses (INEC) presented the figures of the migratory movement corresponding to 2020 in Ecuador. According to the Statistical Register of International Entries and Exits, almost a million people entered the country last year.
In 2020, men report a higher percentage of entering and leaving the country in relation to women. In this sense, they register a total of 259,105 entries compared to 250,494 for women.
Foreigners from 50 to 64 years of age are the ones who have entered the country the most and in the same way they are the ones who leave the most. 22.3% of the total entries of foreigners correspond to this age group with a total of 104,678 movements. Approximately 54.7% of total entries are due to tourism. 19.9% enter the country for reasons of residence.
The incentive that Ecuadorians have to leave the country is tourism with 60.2% of all international departures. Residence is the second most frequent with 21.1%. In this category, the preferred destination was the United States with 43.3% of all registered international departures. Peru and Mexico are also favorite destination countries with 16.7% and 10.7% respectively.
Foreigners of United States nationality are those with the highest percentage of entries to the country (30.0%), followed by persons of Colombian and Peruvian nationality with a percentage of 18.2% and 9.6%.
