Until July this year, 259,506 people with disabilities of working age, ie from 18 to 65 years old, were recorded in the country. Of these, 80,070 are in the database of the Ecuadorian Institute of Social Security (IESS) as active members. They are people under labor dependency, according to the National Council for Disability Equality (Conadis for its Spanish acronym).
If volunteer affiliates and self-employed are added, the total number is 87,030 people. The figure represents 33% of those who could be employed.
But Xavier Torres, president of Conadis says that not all working-age universe is able to do so. He mentions, for example, that 21,360 people who require a caregiver for because of their health conditions have been registered. They receive the Joaquín Gallegos Lara bonus, of $ 240 per month.
Other 126,533 people charge a disability pension of $ 50 because they are in a situation of extreme vulnerability. The state invests USD 137 436 600 per year in these subsidies. In addition, the number of employed disabled people in six years has also been requested by the government. In 2011 there were 9,911 employees.
