25 countries unite to fight against child labor
Labour ministers and representatives from 25 countries in Latin America and the Caribbean signed in Lima, the statement of formation of an initiative seeking to free the region from child labor.
The “Regional Initiative for Latin America and The Caribbean Free from Child Labour” was signed within the framework of the 18th Regional Meeting of the International Labour Organization (ILO) and seeks to prevent and eliminate child labor and its worst forms through intergovernmental cooperation.
“We want the withdrawal of children from child labor and protection of the rights of working adolescents, as pillars of a regional proposal that -in the light of the new millennium objectives- seeks progress in the fight against this scourge,” said Peruvian Labor Minister Fredy Otárola.
The statement was signed by representatives of Argentina, Bahamas, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Cuba, Ecuador, El Salvador, Guatemala, Guyana, Haiti, Honduras, Jamaica, Mexico, Nicaragua, Panama, Paraguay, Peru, Republic Republic, Suriname, Trinidad and Tobago, Uruguay and Venezuela.
