Japanese police has reported that the death toll after the earthquake and tsunami that struck Japan’s territory is 1,900, while over 3,000 people are missing.
However, the death toll could rise dramatically since 2,000 bodies were found in the coast of Miyagi province–which was the most affected region– 200 or 300 bodies were found in its capital, Sendai.
In the town of Minamisanriku, also in Miyagi, 9,500 people–half of the population–have n3ot been located by authorities, who began their search last Friday, although it is believed that some might have seeked shelter in neighboring villages, reports local agency Kyodo. In addition, 8,000 residents of Otsuchi, in the province of Iwate, are missing as well.
A team of approximately 100,000 soldiers is working at the northeast of Japan in search of victims who were washed away by the tidal ten-meter wave, while 550,000 people were evacuated due to the disaster.
