Passengers who arrive in Ecuador from the 13 countries with the highest number of coronavirus cases and do not have a place to stay during the 14 days in compulsory isolation, may go to one of the 40 rooms that the State has enabled to receive them.

This was reported by the Ministry of Tourism (Mintur). Travelers required to be quarantined will be those arriving from China, Spain, France, Iran, Germany, South Korea, Italy, Denmark, Norway, the Netherlands, Sweden, Switzerland, and the US, before the border closure announced yesterday.

Holbach Muñetón, president of the National Federation of Tourism Chambers , applauded the strategy. “It is fabulous because , beyond the cost, it will allow the hotel staff to be precautionary.”

However, he also claims the lack of medical insurance for tourists and recalled that the Federation proposed it , but was not accepted.

“If this had been approved we would not have this problem (…). Ecuadorians must think that this is a global problem , “added Muñetón.

The covid-19 impacts on the economy of the whole world , he said, and recalled that, in the Ecuadorian case, the most affected sector is tourism. For this reason, according to their estimates , this group expects a loss of 80% .
Health protocols

The Mintur and the Ministry of Public Health (MSP) developed three health protocols as part of preventive measures to prevent the health of national visitors (internal tourism) as well as international visitors .

The first is the Accommodation Protocol , which seeks to capture possible cases of coronavirus in the country .

At the hotel, the receptionist will give the guest an information booklet on the identification of symptoms and recommendations on the disease.

If the staff identifies a possible case , they should report to the establishment manager , the MSP and the Mintur. Additionally , the person must be isolated.

They must also provide protective equipment to the person who will have contact with the possible infected and activate the epidemiological fence.

Secondly, there is the Boat Protocol , which applies to river maritime tourist transport with overnight stays on board.

Once the ship detects symptoms in one of the crew , it will proceed to isolate the cases. If a person shares a room with the suspected case, they should be separated.

Finally, the Mintur sent the Protocol for Tour Operators. At this point, it is the guide who should be alert to symptoms related to covid-19 that tourists would present.

“In the event that a possible suspicious case has been identified , the guide will proceed to isolate the traveler from the rest of the group and will put on the surgical mask. The person assigned must activate the protocol and verify the isolation, ”explains the statement.
