Posted On 22 Aug 2012
At least 48 people were killed due to clashes between members of two rival tribes, the Pokomo tribe and the Orma tribe, in Tana River District, eastern Kenya, Kenyan media reported.
“I can confirm that 48 people died. Among them, six men, eleven children and the rest are women,” said Deputy Chief of the Coast Province Police Department, Robert Kitur.
In addition, many people were injured and sixty cows were killed in the attack.
Both ethnic groups compete for the grass in the Tana River region, a dry climate zone that suffers frequent droughts. MZ
