Adjustment on the payment of tax by vehicular pollution takes effect
Citizens are beginning to see the consequences of the adjustment to the Vehicular Environmental Pollution Tax. Now, owners of vehicles of more than five years of fabrication and a cylinder capacity exceeding 2 500 cubic centimeters (cm3) must pay a larger amount along with the annual registration tax.
The law opened a transition period for larger displacement vehicles to have a discount and do not pay the real value of the tax.
The second transitional law established a 80% discount on the tax payment, a benefit that ended last year. Since 2015 it was reduced to 50% and will remain so until 2016.
During these two years, motor vehicles that have a cylinder capacity greater than 2500 cm3 and are more than five years old, counting from the year of fabrication, have a 50% discount in the AEFI value. The discount was 80% until last year.
The tax calculation is obtained by taking into account two tables: one of the rate per cylinder capacity and another by the number of years.
For example, a vehicle with a displacement of 4000 cm3 and of 2003 shall pay USD 630 per year. On this amount a 50% discount is applied for the transitional provision applies, so the user would pay USD 315 this year. In 2014 the same car would have paid only $ 126.
