Ambev dominates the local beer market
The presence of Anheuser-Busch InBev, the world’s largest beer company, was slightly felt in Ecuador. This Belgian-Brazilian multinational, that worked in the country with its subsidiary Ambev Ecuador, bought the Anglo-South African SABMiller, a company that since 2005 owns the National Brewery Company.
Globally this meant the merging of two giants. AB InBev is the world’s largest brewery company, with a portfolio that exceeds 200 international brands. According to the 2014 report of the company, they employ about 155 000 people in 25 countries.
SABMiller also fights a place among the three largest brewery companies. They work with 69,000 employees in 80 countries, according to its results report in 2015. The company also owns more than 200 brands of beer.
Karen Couck, director of the Department of External Communications of AB InBev, said it is too early to comment on what the effects of this fusion will be in local markets such as Ecuador.
However, she states that “they are very excited about Ecuador and they have great respect for SABMiller and the National Brewery Company,” a company that manufactures brands that have “a long history in the country.”
