Associated Press journalist dies by projectile explosion in Gaza

Posted On 14 Aug 2014

Periodista-AP-muere-Franja-de-GazaThe Associated Press (AP) news agency reported the death of Simone Camilli, agency journalist and a Palestinian translator, Ali Abu Afash Shehda by an explosion when they worked on an article about the aftermath of recent fighting in the Gaza Strip .

The incident occurred when the police engineers were neutralizing bombs in Beit Lahiya that had remained untapped in clashes between Israel and Islamic militants.

Police reported that four police engineers also died and three others suffered serious injuries, including AP photographer Hatem Musa.

Musa told a colleague that they were filming the scene when the first explosion occurred. Shrapnel hit him and started to run when the second blast caused him to lose consciousness. He woke up in a hospital where he was operated on later.

Camilli, an Italian 35 years, worked for the AP since 2005 when he was hired in Rome. He moved to Jerusalem in 2006 and often worked in Gaza.
