Carlos Bernal: ‘This Court gives a deferential treatment to the president’

Monday Colombian constitutional expert Carlos Bernal Pulido gave at the Espiritu Santo University (UEES) guidelines for the “restoration of disfigured constitutionalism” in the country following the adoption of the amendment that gave way to the indefinite reelection.

Two years ago Bernal Pulido already conducted a study at the request of the Ecuador Libre Foundation, led by presidential hopeful Guillermo Lasso.

“I disagree with that decision by questions of form and substance. What the Constitutional Court has to make in a democratic state is to guarantee that the rules and constitutionalism rise to the standard mandates. This Court gives a deferential treatment to the president. Constitutional courts exist to defend the rights of individuals and not public institutions.” Bernal told to daily El Universo.
