Chevron: “The Ecuadorian judge’s decision is unlawful and unenforceable”
On Valentine’s day, Chevron received a non-romantic surprise, since Ecuadorian judge, Nicolas Zambrano, accused the U.S. oil company for environmental pollution.
As reported by James Craig, a spokesman for Chevron, the company must pay 9,510 million dollars for environmental damage in Ecuador. “We will appeal all instances in Ecuador because that ruling is fraudulent, and if we do not find justice in the judicial system, we will certainly go
to international instances in order to hear the truth and justice,” said Craig in an interview with Ecuavisa (Ecuadorian television channel).
Pablo Fajardo, the plaintiff lawyer, said they did not expect to receive that money until there is a last resort sentence in the country. He explained that the trial is in the first instance, then it will go to appeal and then to implementation (payment) in a foreign country. This process could take three or four years, which is an optimistic estimate.
