Cocoa makes chocolate ‘melt away’
Posted On 15 Jul 2016
Hershey Co.’s rejection of the $ 23,000 million offer made by Mondelēz international Inc. earlier this month comes at a time when rising prices of raw materials make production costs of a chocolate bar more expensive.
The sudden increase in two crucial ingredients of chocolate, cocoa butter and sugar, is an unpleasant event for chocolate manufacturers, who had already raised the prices of the bars and other cocoa based products after previous increases in commodities. Increasing competition from snack bars and other healthy options also limits the ability of the chocolate industry of continue raising prices.
