Colombia and the FARC reach agreement on demining
The peace negotiators of the Colombian government and the FARC reached on March 7 in Cuba, a historic agreement on demining. “The government and the FARC have agreed to request the organization Norwegian People’s Aid lead and coordinate the implementation of a project cleaning and decontamination of mines in rural areas in the context of armed conflict,” said the parties in a statement read by the Cuban diplomat Rodolfo Benitez, whose country is the guarantor of the peace process for Colombia with Norway.
“The government and the FARC will work together to clean some rural areas,” said chief government negotiator, Humberto de la Calle (photo). “The main objective is to end the conflict (…) and therefore the proposal demining is a giant step toward peace,” he added.
