Colombian Court opens the possibility for the FARC to participate in politics
Colombia’s Constitutional Court ratified on Wednesday the possible participation in policy of guerrillas who lay down their arms after a peace process, informed the body in a statement.
The amendment, known as Legal Framework for Peace and which was approved by Congress in 2012, was supported by six of the nine judges of the Court, the judicial body that oversees the integrity of the Magna Carta.
Only those who have committed “minor” offenses may be involved in politics, except for those accused of crimes against humanity and genocide, said Judge Martha Sáchica, author of the paper that was approved.
The government of President Juan Manuel Santos has driven this reform as legal basis for the peace process with the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC).
