Communication Act makes the media and journalists to self-censor, according to Guarderas

Posted On 12 Oct 2015

Legal expert Santiago Guarderas when commenting on the recent resolution of the Inter American Press Association (IAPA), which condemned the implementation of the Communication Act of Ecuador for restricting freedom of speech and press, said that this exhortation is very important for democratic countries that fulfill their international commitments in the framework of freedom of expression.

The SIP posed to the Ecuadorian government to raise an advisory opinion before the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR) to see if the Communication Act is compatible with international human rights treaties.

While the Government rejected such appeals, this is typical of authoritarian regimes such as: Argentina, Venezuela, Bolivia, of all those who are called Socialist of the XXI Century. According to Guarderas, the purpose is to demonstrate that the Communication Act does not comply with international standards of freedom of expression.
