Conaie declared itself in disobedience
Posted On 05 Aug 2014
Yesterday, the Confederation of Indigenous Nationalities of Ecuador (Conaie for its Spanish acronym) and Ecuarunari declared themselves in disobedience. This, after the judgment given by the Constitutional Court (CC) on July 30 in connection with ‘La Cocha’ case.
Jorge Herrera, President of Conaie, said that this resolution seeks to reform the 2008 Constitution which in Article 171 recognizes in general terms the “indigenous justice”.
“We see that this decision has the political interest of a regime. They are saying that we do not have the capacity to solve our problems”, Herrera said.
Next Thursday, the group will discuss the possibility of asking for a referendum on the constitutional amendments proposed by PAIS political movement.
