Correa clarifies the affiliation issue for independent employees

Posted On 16 Mar 2014

Correa-Afiliación Obligatoria.jpgDuring the transmission of the Weekly address last Friday, President Rafael Correa clarified that the affiliation of independent professionals and workers to social security must be voluntary and not mandatory, And it should be done upon real incomes.

Correa said that the resolution was misunderstood.

“It is illegal and unconstitutional to force independent workers to join the Social Security. Now, if they affiliate, I totally agree that they should do it based on their real income, because when they voluntarily affiliate,  they do it upon the minimum wage’, Correa said, referring to the recent controversy over this figure.

Last week various social sectors have questioned Resolution 464 of the Ecuadorian Institute of Social Security (IESS) about  oligatory Affiliation Applicable to people Without Dependency Relations, un which they must contribute  the 20.60% of their incomes.

Fernando Cordero, President of the Ecuadorian Institute of Social Security, clarified that this kind of affiliation was voluntary.
