Correa: “Our country will not have a tsunami, but a strong surge”
The President of the Republic of Ecuador, Rafael Correa, said this Friday that the possibility of flooding in Guayaquil, due to the tsunami in Japan, is almost improbable.
Following the declaration of tsunami warning in 20 countries, which included Ecuador, the Head of State said this afternoon that the country will not have a tsunami n the coastal region but a strong surge. However, he said “we still have to wait, ” because it is expected the waves to reach the Galapagos Islands from 5:30 to 6:00 the wave reaches the Galapagos. The population has already been evacuated from the islands.
The president said that according to the information they have so far there were no Ecuadorian casualties in the earthquake and tsunami in Japan.
