Correa questioned Jimenez protection by the Sarayaku people
President Rafael Correa yesterday questioned the protection that provides Sarayaku people to former Assemblyman Cléver Jiménez, his advisor, Fernando Villavicencio, and activist Carlos Figueroa.
Correa refuted the decision of this nationality and said it could lead to “serious consequences” because the three protected are “fugitives”.
`They are provoking, they are willing the violence and if that happens, the responsibility lies to those who challenged the rule of law, the three fugitives, instead of facing their responsibilities are setting out that community,´ he said.
“They think they’re above the law courts; they seeking the State to react to see if there are dead, violence, to have an excuse to request the Government´s collapse,´ Correa said.
The people enjoys precautionary measures granted by the Inter-American Court of Human Rights (Inter-American), following a demand that the community pushed against oil exploration, which prevents the entry of public and military force in the area.
