Cubans seek asylum to the US

A police operation conducted yesterday at 03:00 evicted Cuban citizens who were camping outside the Embassy of Mexico. They remain now under a visor in La Carolina Park.
The situation of Cuban citizens residing in Ecuador tends to get worse. Early yesterday morning, about 400 islanders were evicted by the police outside the Embassy of Mexico, where they were camping since last week.
Since yesterday, Cuban citizens remain at La Carolina Park, in the north of Quito. They are sheltered by the zinc visor which belongs to the skating and cycling rink. In the center they placed a few mattresses and backpacks they managed to rescue after the police operation.
Efrain Sanchez, spokesman for the islanders, said that more than a thousand riot police troops arrived about 03:00 and began to destroy tents and to take the Cuban´s food.
“They did not care about the children, pregnant women and people with disabilities in the site, they only evicted us and brought us until here,” he said.
What will they do? Joslel Garcia said they will remain in La Carolina Park and wait for the help of Government authorities. He said there is the decision to seek political asylum to the United States. He argues that what happened in the early hours of yesterday turns this humanitarian problem into a political problem, and they will request the Obama administration to intervene and give them the opportunity to get to that country.(I)
