Japanese defence ministry officials told the Kyodo news agency that 1,800 homes in Fukushima prefecture have been destroyed.
More than 1,000 people probably died in the massive earthquake and tsunami disaster that devastated parts of Japan on Friday, Kyodo news agency said.
Some 200 bodies were found in Sendai, in Miyagi Prefecture (northeastern Japan).
The police assessment is provisional, because they find it difficult to collect data in regions affected by the natural disasters.
