‘Difficulties’ for the freedom of expression in Ecuador, UN committee observes
The Human Rights Committee of the United Nations Organization (UN) warned about ‘difficulties’ in the exercise of freedom of expression in Ecuador, at the end of a meeting in which the State underwent a periodic evaluation.
Its president, Fabian Salvioli, closed yesterday’s session with a message addressed to Chancellor Guillaume Long, head of the Ecuadorian delegation: “Nobody has said that there is no freedom of expression in Ecuador, of course there is, what we have said is that there are difficulties and these difficulties have to be addressed, we have to see how we can improve.”
And he suggested: “In human rights matters we must not be satisfied with what there is, we always have to see how to move forward.”
Salvioli referred to the subject, which he described as one of the “most crucial items (of the session),” before closing the second day on which the Committee ‘examined’ the compliance with the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights by the State.
