Drought affects Guayas´s farmers

In February of this year, the Minister of agriculture, Javier Ponce, knowing drought that will hit the agro of Guayas, Los Ríos, El Oro and Manabí, put in maintenance all electrical appliances that capture water from the Daule river and send it by artificial canals to the farms of 3,500 producers.The maintenance of pumps and the roofing to protect them, the adaptation and acclimatization of the control room started on February 20. In som populations of Guayas like America Lomas there are nine teams of pumping with a capacity of 500 hp each and they can send a total of 18 cubic meters of water per second; in the Mate, 9 (125 hp); Higuerón 7 and San Jacinto 6.
`The only way that the Government ensure the production of rice (728.000 tons of milled rice, according to the consultancy company Inclusis, which works for the Government) is making bombs work in the dry, very dry stage that is coming soom´, says Julio Carchi, who sees serious social problems in areas without irrigation during the summer. He proposes the construction of a new dam between Pedro Carbo (Guayas) and Paján (Manabi), to control the water.
