E! News Anchor, Giuliana Rancic, Fights To Overcome Breast Cancer

Posted On 08 Dec 2011

On October 17th, the E! News and Style Network host Giuliana Rancic, 36, announced on NBC’s Todayshow that she suffered from breast cancer. Doctors discovered a tumor during a mammogram as Giuliana was undergoing another round of in-vitro fertilization in her third attempt to get pregnant.

Although the cancer was detected on an early stage and Giuliana underwent a double lumpectomy and a radiation treatment for weeks, it was not enough to eradicate the disease. Giuliana’s husband, Bill Rancic, has been supporting his wife in this difficult time.

The couple talked about the possibility of Giuliana undergoing lumpectomy and radiation treatment for the second time, but the recovery period meant the couple would have to delay parenthood for years, so they chose the most drastic way to eliminate Giuliana’s cancer: a double mastectomy.

Giuliana and Bill want to be sure the cancer is gone, and make it much less likely to return – less than a 1 percent chance according to doctors. “For me, it was important to get the cancer out,” she said. “That’s what I wanted to do, just get it out,” Giuliana said on Todayshow on Monday.

“Bill said to me, ‘I just need you around for the next 50 years, kid,’ ” she said. “He said, ‘I don’t care what you look like, I don’t care about the physical portion of this. I just need you around for the next 50 years. So, let’s just get you healthy.’ And that certainly helped me come to a decision…I couldn’t be more at peace with the decision. But it’s hard, and I still break down some nights … But I’m okay,” she added.

“My breasts have never defined me – and now they never will,” says Giuliana, who told People Magazine her surgery is scheduled for Dec. 13.
