Ecuador and Peru live an ‘impasse’ after 19 years

Posted On 11 Jul 2017

Ecuadornews:

Since 1998, Ecuador and Peru had not had a single incident, after the signing of the peace with which ended the dispute over the border limits. However, 19 years later, the construction of a wall in Huaquillas bring the two countries into a diplomatic conflict. A wall to avoid floods in the winter season is erected in El Oro.

Former Foreign Minister Francisco Carrión believes that Peru’s reaction to an issue that can be resolved through dialogue is exaggerated. “It’s a desperate gesture. Both countries have lived a honeymoon all this time. Since 1998 there has been a friendly and impeccable relationship.”
Carrión also believes that this claim would have been avoided if the Ecuadorian authorities reported to their Peruvian peers the plans to build this wall. (I)
