On September 21, the US authorized the entry of the pitahaya fruit from production sites and collection centers registered in the Work Plan signed between the Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (Aphis) and Agrocalidad. Currently, there are 1,634 hectares of pitahaya in the country, and 254 registered producers, collectors, and exporters.
The approved commercial exchange will mainly benefit the farmers of Morona Santiago, Guayas, Pichincha, Imbabura, Santo Domingo, Santa Elena and El Oro. According to Agrocalidad figures, in 2016, 830 tons of fruit were exported, but thanks to the new agreement, the export of approximately 8,000 tonnes is expected. (I)
