Ecuador is Demanded by the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights
Yesterday, the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR) filed a complaint before the Inter-American Court against Ecuador due to the arbitrary dismissal of eight members of the Constitutional Court by the Congress in November 2004.
In a statement, the Commission concluded that the judges were dismissed by a Congress resolution (not mentioned in the Constitution) that did not have guarantees of such process or able to defend themselves.
The Commission noted that the cessation of the members came “at a height of political and institutional weaknesses of the judiciary in Ecuador.” Along with vocals, other judges of the Supreme Court and the Supreme Electoral Tribunal were dismissed by the Congress, who was later denied access to justice.
“This case will allow the Court to advance standards for a fair trial must be established regarding the process for removal of judges,” said the Commission.
