Ecuador, Peru and Colombia will develop artisanal mining
Posted On 28 Apr 2014
Ecuador, Colombia and Peru, during the first Trinational Meeting of Artisanal Mining, pledged to cooperate in the development of artisanal mining, that many of their inhabitants practice in an ancestral way. In addition, they will also fight the illegal activity.
In the meeting, which took place in Quito, it was intended to define what really means small-scale, artisanal or traditional mining. The three Nations also clarified the difference between the artisanal mining (of subsistence) and illegal (whose executors look exclusively for the benefits of extraction without measuring the damage to the environment). Therefore, they will form a special working force to promote the eradication of illegal mining.
Likewise, they will seek to exchange knowledge on the implementation of clean technologies in the exploitation of gold and eliminate the use of mercury in mining activities. The Ecuadorian Vice-Minister of mines, Dixon Briceño, highlighted the work done in the meeting and commitment to `join efforts and methodologies from other countries´.
