Ecuador seeks to accelerate agreement with the EU
It is still expected that Colombia and Peru give the green light so Ecuador definitely signs the trade agreement with the European Union (EU).
In this regard, the Minister of Industries, Eduardo Egas, told Daily Expreso that the lack of acceptance of the two Andean countries has not stopped the agenda. Proof of this is that the European Parliament has approved to continue with the remaining steps.
He added that he has spoken with the authorities of Peru and Colombia so they give their approval as soon as possible. Meanwhile, Ecuadorian banana producers are concerned, because they pay more tariffs in EU than producers of Colombia.
That makes Colombian bananas, for now, more economical. So the fear is that without a trade agreement the neighboring country can take the EU market.
Egas said that Ecuadorian banana producers knew that at first there would be an inequality in taxes compared to what Colombia pays.
