Posted On 27 Jun 2016
The delegation of the Ecuadorian fishing sector will participate from today until next Friday in the annual meeting of the Inter-American Tropical Tuna Commission (IATTC) taking place in California, United States, and will insist on the implementation of a comprehensive closed season for tuna.
The national delegation is made up of Bruno Leone, Gian Perotti and Rafael Trujillo, president, vice president and executive director of the National Chamber of Fisheries.
This, according to a communiqué from the guild, in which they explain that the ban is aimed at extending the care of tuna in all oceans and not only in the Eastern Pacific Ocean (EPO).
The decrease in tuna fishing in this region is another issue to be discussed at the meeting. According to figures of the IATTC, between January and May this year, catches of tuna in the EPO have fallen by 21,565 tonnes. In the period of 2015, catches of 242,792 tonnes were recorded, compared to 221,227 tonnes recorded in 2016. (I)
